What is the CoolCanopy Program?
The Spokane Conservation District (SCD) is proud to introduce the CoolCanopy Program, a new initiative dedicated to increasing tree canopy coverage in Spokane County’s low canopy and underserved neighborhoods, including Airway Heights and Spokane Valley. Our goal is to significantly increase the canopy coverage in these areas by 2030, addressing environmental justice and promoting healthier communities.
Program Objectives
At SCD, we are committed to promoting environmental sustainability and creating a healthier, more equitable community for all residents.
We recognize that access to green spaces and the benefits of urban tree canopies are often lacking in underserved areas. The CoolCanopy Program aims to bridge this gap by strategically planting trees in neighborhoods that have been historically underserved and have lower levels of canopy coverage.
The Benefits of Tree Canopy
Trees play a vital role in creating healthy and sustainable
environments, offering numerous benefits that enhance the quality of life for communities.
Stormwater Management
Trees help reduce flooding by capturing rainwater and improving soil health.
Cooling
Shade from trees lower energy costs and reduce urban heat.
Air Quality
Trees absorb pollutants, improving the air we breathe.
Other Benefits
Wildlife habitats, increased property values, and stronger community connections.

A District Forester will work with the landowner to decide which tree species is best suited for the site.
Who plants the trees?
A District forester will collaborate closely with the landowner to develop a plan and timeline for tree planting. Our Forestry apprentices from the Natural Resources Youth Apprenticeship Program will be involved in tree planting along with staff from The Lands Council.
Who maintains the trees?
Once planted, property and business owners are responsible for the care and maintenance of the trees. This includes watering, pruning, and other necessary upkeep.
