Rooted in Industry

Before it became a center of innovation, education, and conservation, the 50-acre site at 8th and Havana in Spokane Valley had a different life—one rooted in industry. For decades, it served as an active mining operation, later home to an asphalt plant that produced materials for the very streets people drove on daily.

A Vision Reimagined

In 2017, the Spokane Conservation District (SCD) recognized the tremendous potential this quiet, forgotten corner of Spokane Valley held. SCD purchased the site and spent 18 months engaging the community, stakeholders, and experts to develop a comprehensive Campus Master Plan—laying out a 10-year vision where technology, conservation, and community could converge.

A Growing Hub for Community and Sustainability

By 2019, transformation began with a redesigned building to house a nature-based preschool and new on-site SCD offices. The Aspen Partnership Building followed, fostering collaboration around sustainability. With the addition of the Scale
House Market—featuring local produce, vendors, and a learning kitchen—the Quarry continues to evolve as a space where lessons from the land’s industrial past inspire a more sustainable, equitable future.
