About SCD's Annual Tree Sale

Online orders for plant purchases can be made on our website starting Monday, January 13th at 8:00 AM through Friday, March 7th. Orders before January 13th will not be accepted.

SCD’s Spring Tree Sale features a variety of native trees and shrubs for conservation purposes such as reforestation, wildlife habitat, windbreaks, and stream enhancement. These plants are also ideal for your backyard.

Most plants are bareroot stock, meaning they are harvested in winter while dormant, making them affordable, hardy, easy to handle, transport, and plant. Bareroot plants are 1-2 years old and come with well-developed roots.

All species are sold in bundles of 5 for $15 (unless noted otherwise), and species cannot be mixed.

Save more when purchasing large quantities of reforestation species like ponderosa pine, douglas fir, grand fir, and western larch. Automatic discounts will be applied to qualifying orders.

Plants sell out quickly, so order early! Not tech-savvy? Call us at 509-535-7274 and a staff member will help you place your order over the phone.

Additional information about the sale can be found in the FAQ Section toward the bottom of this page.

Caring for and Planting Your Seedlings

How big are the seedlings at the time of distribution?

The majority of our bare-root seedlings range in size from 3-24’’ tall, and unless otherwise indicated, are not potted and come in minimum bundles of five (unless otherwise noted).

An 8" seedling is grown in a greenhouse for one year. The 8" seedlings have an advantage to planting large quantities because they are much smaller and less labor-intensive.

Reforestation trees are available in 8" size, as well as Plug 1 size. The P1 seedlings, are a year older than the 8" seedlings and they are quite a bit larger, about a foot or taller and they have a larger caliper stem with some branching and a larger more extensive root system. A P1 seedling is grown for one year in a greenhouse and an additional year in the field.

What happens if my trees or shrubs die?

Due to environmental factors beyond our control, SCD cannot guarantee the survivability of the seedlings we sell. As a result, refunds or rain checks will not be issued.

To ensure the best chance of success, all plants require consistent watering during their first three years to establish a strong root system. If you are unable to plant your seedlings immediately after pickup, please refer to the Storing Your Seedlings section for tips on how to store them properly for later planting.

If you have questions or concerns about your trees or shrubs, our Forestry department is here to help. You can reach them at (509) 535-7274, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, for expert guidance.

Storing Your Seedlings

If you must store your plants before planting, choose a storage area that is cool, well-ventilated, and darksuch as a garage or another similar space. It is important to keep plants protected from drying out, overheating, or freezing.

For short-term storage, leave the plants in their sealed bags. The hydrogel coating on the roots helps retain moisture, keeping them ready for planting. If you need to store the plants for a longer period, consider transferring them to pots to maintain their health.

Avoid storing plants near fresh produce or cut flowers, as these release ethylene gas, which is harmful to live plant material. Ensure the roots remain moist while keeping the tops of the plants dry for the best results.

Cancellations

Cancellations must be made prior to the final pre-order date of March 7th, 2025, otherwise a 25% deposit of the total order will be forfeited. To cancel an order please call (509) 535-7274.

Receipt of Order

You will receive a confirmation email once you place your order online. Please contact SCD as soon as possible if you notice an error on the order form. Please bring your order number with you to collect your seedlings.
